Matter is an industry-unifying standard that provides reliable and secure connectivity for smart-home devices. It is an IP-based connectivity protocol that works on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread (over 802.15.4 radio) transports with Bluetooth LE being used for commissioning. The Matter standard is defined by the Connectivity Standards Alliance in association with all the industry leaders.

Espressif, as a member of the Connectivity Standards Alliance, is an active contributor to the development of the Matter protocol. Espressif, with its unique combination of connectivity SoCs, software, and complete solutions makes it easy for our customers to build Matter-enabled smart-home devices of various types. Espressif provides the most comprehensive solutions for Matter, including support for Wi-Fi or Thread end-point devices, Thread Border Routers, and Matter gateway reference designs.

Wi-Fi End Device
Our Wi-Fi-enabled SoCs and modules, such as those included in the ESP32, ESP32-C and ESP32-S series, can be used for building Matter-compatible Wi-Fi devices.
Thread End Device
ESP32-H SoCs and modules supporting IEEE 802.15.4 can be used for building Matter-compatible Thread end devices.
Ethernet End Device
Our ESP32 and ESP32-S SoCs can be used for building Matter-compatible Ethernet end devices.
* ESP32-S series devices need to use external Ethernet controller to provide Ethernet connectivity.
Thread Border Router
By combining?ESP32-H and ESP32-S3?or?another Espressif Wi-Fi SoC, e.g., ESP32, a Thread border router can be built for connecting Thread networks with Wi-Fi networks.
SDK for Matter
Open-Source Matter SDK
This is the open-source implementation of the Matter protocol, which is jointly done by CSA member companies and the community. Not only does this provides a device implementation, but it also includes Android and iOS controller implementations. The ESP32 series of chips is an integral part of this open-source Matter SDK.

Espressif’s SDK for Matter
Espressif’s SDK for Matter has been developed over the open-source Matter SDK to provide a simplified API and the required tools for building Matter-compatible devices with Espressif SoCs. This SDK defines periodic releases and support structures that ensure maintaining the in-field devices effectively.

ACK SDK for Matter
The Alexa Connect Kit (ACK) SDK for Matter is an Amazon solution, with support from Espressif, which makes the SDK work on Espressif SoCs. This SDK can be used for building Matter-compatible devices by taking advantage of the Amazon software that simplifies the development and management of Espressif devices. The ACK SDK for Matter currently supports Wi-Fi end-devices and is supported on Espressif’s ESP32-C3 and ESP8685 modules with a 4MB-minimum flash.

Demo Video for Matter
This demo shows Espressif’s comprehensive solution for Matter connectivity that includes Wi-Fi end devices, Thread end devices, a Thread Border Router, and Matter Zigbee Bridge providing Matter connectivity to off-the-shelf Zigbee devices. The demo showcases the device-to-device communication irrespective of connectivity technology in the Local Area Network without relying on the internet connectivity.
